Notes on Feednet, Vol. 8: a good old therapist ‘no’
Feednet is a quarterly-ish news roundup on technology, community organizing, and this month, mass extinction. Subscribe to Feednet here.
Feednet Vol 8. (What DO we do when we feel like this, you know?)
Howdy, Do you know about that therapist: no meme? I feel like I know how I could find out the origin of this meme but I refuse to engage because I’m too tired. That’s how you know it’s summer, right? Or how you know you’re... old. In the last couple of months I’ve moved, made some big progress on job hunting, 5 Minute Speech Coach building, and learned a lot about crows (oh my god crows are So smart did everyone else already know that). Because Chicago weather is terrible I didn’t even realize it was summer until maybe... yesterday? So now I will be at the beach constantly until those ice waves form on Lake Michigan. Either because it’s winter, or it’s global extinction time (don’t worry, we’ll come back to that later). How about you? Did you know it was summer before you got this email? Any big moves happening in your life? Hit reply and let me know.
Here’s the roundup:
After a terrible retrograde, all my technology seemed to fall apart. Apparently this is normal. Did you like the Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch? Make your own on Eko, a new channel for ‘choose your own adventure’ style media. I finally got 5MSC set up — more soon. The more I read about AI, the more I understand why all technocrat CEO/gods seem like they are constantly on mushrooms. This technology company sponsored podcast experiments with different ways to use AI — in this episode, they put on an https://player.fm/series/2509610/236421125. Look, I know it’s not news that we’re all on our way to extinction, but it’s definitely... hard to focus when you think about it too much. This article, and putting the ideas from it into practice, is my first step towards being able to watch nature shows again. (I’m still hoping the robots will intercede). I went to a very cool conference a few weeks ago called Bias in Big Data at Northwestern. The keynote was by Yeshimabeit Milner the founder of Data for Black Lives. All of these links are very cool and worth clicking around in, especially if you’re someone who thinks about data and narrative a lot. This John Waters interview isn’t really organizing or technology related, but I think it’s worth it (even the tense interlude between him and the reporter about trans identity) for how mad he is about bad movies. Therapist: and what do we do when we feel this way? Me: put all the articles about human extinction into feednet and make my friends lose sleep over them too Therapist: no — Have a good week, please go outside. - H
